Is Nutella Vegan? (No, and Here Are the Alternatives)
No. Nutella contains skimmed milk powder as one of its seven ingredients. This makes it unsuitable for vegans. There is no vegan version of Nutella available from Ferrero (the manufacturer).
The full Nutella ingredients are: sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts (13%), skimmed milk powder (8.7%), fat-reduced cocoa powder (7.4%), emulsifier (soy lecithin), and vanillin. The milk powder is the only non-vegan ingredient.
There is also an ethical debate around palm oil in Nutella. While palm oil is technically vegan (plant-derived), its production is linked to deforestation and habitat destruction. Some vegans avoid it for environmental reasons.
Fortunately, there are excellent vegan alternatives available in UK supermarkets: Biscoff Spread (accidentally vegan, caramelised biscuit flavour), Vego Hazelnut Spread (the closest to Nutella in taste), Meridian Cocoa & Hazelnut Butter (less sugar, more natural), and Aldi Salted Caramel Choc Spread (new for 2026, only £1.69).
