Vegan Subway UK: How to Build a Fully Vegan Sub
Subway is one of the more vegan-friendly fast food chains because you build your own sub from scratch. The key is knowing which breads, proteins, sauces, and sides are vegan.
Vegan bread
This is the first hurdle and the most important. Not all Subway breads are vegan:
- Italian (white) — vegan.
- Hearty Italian — vegan.
- Italian Herbs & Cheese — NOT vegan (contains cheese and dairy).
Availability varies by location. Always ask which breads are available and confirm they are vegan. Wraps are generally vegan but check the specific type.
Vegan fillings
- Meatless Meatball Marinara — plant-based meatballs in marinara sauce. The main vegan protein option.
- Smashed Falafel — launched in 2026, available at most locations.
- All salad and vegetables — lettuce, tomato, cucumber, peppers, onion, sweetcorn, jalapeños, olives, pickles. All vegan.
Vegan sauces
- BBQ, Sweet Chilli, Hot Chilli, HP Brown, Yellow Mustard, Ketchup, Sweet Onion — all vegan.
- Avoid: Mayo, Garlic Aioli, Chipotle Southwest, Ranch, Honey Mustard — all contain egg or dairy.
Vegan sides
- Crisps — most Walkers varieties at Subway are vegan (see our Walkers guide).
- Cookies — none of the standard Subway cookies are vegan (all contain butter and egg).
- Drinks — all soft drinks and water are vegan.
How to order like a pro
Walk in and say: “Italian bread, Meatless Meatball Marinara, toasted without cheese, with lettuce, tomato, peppers, onion, and BBQ sauce.” That gets you a fully vegan sub in one sentence. Staff sometimes add cheese automatically when toasting, so always specify “no cheese.”
