Are Doritos Vegan? Every UK Flavour Checked

Products 25 April 2026 · 5 min read

It depends on the flavour. Like Walkers and Pringles, the Doritos range is split between vegan and non-vegan varieties. The good news is that some of the best flavours - including Chilli Heatwave - are vegan. The dairy-heavy flavours like Tangy Cheese and Cool Original are not.

The easy rule for Doritos

If the flavour name contains the words “cheese”, “cream”, or “steak”, it almost certainly contains dairy and is not vegan. The spicy flavours (Chilli Heatwave) and the plain or BBQ varieties are generally the safe choices for vegans.

This pattern is consistent with Walkers crisps and Pringles - across the major UK crisp brands, dairy is the main ingredient that disqualifies a flavour. Plain, spicy, and vinegar-based seasonings tend to be vegan; cheese, cream, and meat-based flavourings tend not to be.

What about Doritos and E631?

Some strict vegans check for E631 (disodium inosinate), a flavour enhancer that can be derived from animal sources including meat and fish. E631 appears in some Doritos varieties. For most vegans this is not a concern because the source is not specified and E631 can also come from yeast or plant sources. If you are very strict about E-numbers, check the full ingredient list on the pack before buying.

Are Doritos suitable for vegetarians?

Most Doritos varieties are suitable for vegetarians. Even the non-vegan flavours like Tangy Cheese and Cool Original are vegetarian because the non-vegan ingredient is dairy, not meat. The exception would be if a flavour contained meat or fish-derived ingredients - check the label if you are unsure about a specific flavour.

Comparing Doritos to other tortilla chips

If you want a fully vegan tortilla chip experience without checking individual flavours, several own-brand supermarket tortilla chips are entirely plant-based. Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Aldi all sell plain tortilla chips with simple ingredient lists. Some Mexican-style crisp brands like Sibell or Tyrrells also offer vegan tortilla options.

For party sharing scenarios, Chilli Heatwave Doritos are a solid choice - most non-vegans enjoy them just as much as the cheese varieties, so you are not stuck with a flavour no one else wants.
